Hauntings: Intelligent vs Residual

Just a few open questions...
What are your thoughts about intelligent vs residual hauntings?
Do you know how to tell the difference?
How would you handle it if you're involved in a case with an intelligent spirit?

from experience over the years in this field, I have come to understand and accept these ideas of residual and intelligent.
A residual haunting is that of that spirit or apparition interacting with all its familiar surrounding. The energy, the presence (if you will) embedded in the surroundings, the objects, the location of that near and associated to the deceased tends to remain and those surrounding provide enough mana (might I say) for an imprint to replay itself over and over.
An intellegence haunting is when that residual energy present is able and capable of interacting with the living. Both are relevant to each other in the sense of energy left behind (embedded) Residual haunting are more prone to be a replay of something done as to where an intelligent haunting is a present response to current activity.
